Dear friends,
Shavua tov/happy Sunday!
Today is Literary Modiin’s February event - at 20:00 Israel time / 1 pm Eastern / 12 pm Central etc. Register here for the Zoom.
We’ll be hearing about three novels:
The Latecomer by Jean Hanff Korelitz (Here’s a snippet of what I wrote about it in my January newsletter: The novel follows the story of the wealthy, NY-based Oppenheimer family including parents Salo and Johanna, their triplets Harrison, Lewyn and Sally who seem to detest each other from the moment they’re born, and latecomer Phoebe, born 18 years after her older siblings. The story touches on themes of guilt, grief, privilege and race, religion and family. As a reader, I found this novel very fulfilling, and I appreciated the way the author gives us a wide sweep of the time period, along with depth of characters, plot twists, social awareness, politics and more. Once more people read this book, I suspect we’ll see this high up on next year’s readers’ choice survey.
The Red Balcony by Jonathan Wilson - Based on actual events, a gripping novel of sex, love, and justice in the tinderbox of British Mandatory Palestine
The Village Idiot by Steve Stern - A wild, effervescent, absinthe-soaked novel that tells of the life of the extraordinary artist Chaim Soutine (My book club will be reading this later this year).
Hope to see you there! But even if you can’t make it, by registering you’ll receive a link to the recording….Here's the link again: https://bit.ly/3vwrDpC

Julie
